biggest hill vs. smallest mountain

remember when i told you about flying with la rue a few weeks ago?

copilot!

and i mentioned this hill?

cavanal hill

this is cavanal hill which, according to the local chamber of commerce, is the tallest hill in the world. at 1,999 feet it is one small foot short of being an official mountain. from far away it looks a lot bigger but up close it just looks like another part of the landscape.

as chris and i were leaving oklahoma to head home after the trip, we drove right past cavanal hill and i pointed it out to him. i told him about it and wondered out loud "why someone didn't just go put a pile of dirt that was a foot high on the highest point and call it a mountain already?".

he simply responded "what is so special about being the shortest mountain in the world? wouldn't you rather the the world's tallest hill than the world's shortest mountain?"

hmmm... that made me think.

i love it when chris makes me think!

that simple thought could really be applied to so many areas of our lives. where are you striving to be so good and so "big" at something? should we be happy with our place in lives or should we pile an extra foot of dirt on our heads to fit in with the "bigger and better" folks out there?

just something to make you think today. :)

  1. Oh, I have been having this convo with people a lot lately. I've kind of taken a weird life path, and have had to say things like "I don't need the fastest career path, I don't need a whole lot of money...." etc. It doesn't always work for those folks, but I believe it!

    1. I totally agree! Life isn't about how much money we make or being the biggest and best anything (which I kind of need to remind myself of on the daily) but the chances we take and the people we meet along the way! :) Three cheers to living a live of quality and NOT quantity! xoxo

  2. Love this post. Now I need to spend some time reflecting on how big of a fish I want to be - and how big of a pond I want to swim in!

    1. Oh that is another great way to think of it! Personally - I'd prefer to be in communal school of fish in a medium sized pond... :)

  5. Well, it's this thought provoking! You have left me a lot to ponder in my day. I think that it's OK to be worlds biggest bill. Adding a foot of dirt might just make it something that it isn't, just like people and our lives. Sometimes we are looking to reach that next step, be in that next bracket or category - but maybe we need to stop and look at life and realize we are the best at being exactly who we are.

    1. I totally think it is okay to be the world's biggest hill but I'm glad to have had that conversation with my husband and now to have the affirmation of women who I consider not only friends but also colleagues to agree with me! :) xoxo

  6. That is an awesome question! Sort of like the "big fish in a little pond" phenomenon. Or whatever you'd call it. :)

  7. After thinking about this for a few minutes-- here are my two cents... I think it's great to be either! If you're the biggest hill-- it's great because you're the biggest. If you're the smallest mountain-- that's great because you're still a mountain! I think you should see the best in everything and not worry about being a mountain or a hill.

    1. I love your two cents! It was a point of view I hadn't thought about but we do share a similar view - just being happy with who you are and where you are and not trying to be something you aren't! :) Thanks for stopping by! xoxo
